Yes, I think soul mate and ego mate can apply to platonic friends as well. (I kind of prefer the term "soul relative" to "soul mate" since it's broader and that would definitely apply to non-romantic relationships as well.)

I would assume that it's possible to fall out of love with a soul mate. What can sometimes help with staying in love is reminding yourself why you fell in love in the first place. What were the qualities that attracted you initially?
